Friday, May 18th, 2018, at 1:00 PM club members attened the services at Arlington National Cemetery for Holly Bevan, N3MB (SK).  The Navy Color Guard (shown above) performed their duties flawlessly while the Chaplain spoke of the wonderful life Holly share with so many of us.

Uncle Rich Needs You

With less than 7 weeks to go our Field Day Chairman, Rich Grace (KB3ZYO) is looking to fill the several positions on the Field Day Committee.  These are Shelters, Public Information, Message Handler,  and Rigs. 

The Shelter person will head the crew that sets up and tears down the three shelters and one easy-up required for Field Day 2018. 

The Public Information person will insure that all site visitors are greeted, logged in, and given escorted tours of the operation then given a chance to make some contacts. 

Membership Vote May 17

On May 17th the General Membership will be asked to vote on a motion to approve acceptance of a tower maintenance contract with Teltronics for not more than $5200.  This is the same company that performed our last tower maintenance.   At that time the bid was the same, but the final bill was under $2000.  You should also know that this work will not commence until after a proper inspection of the 2m antenna is made to determine if it must be replaced during the same climb.  ,

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day was Saturday May 12th 2018.  On that single day of the year, hams and military operators are allowed to converse on the radio   This is split frequency operation at it's best.  The Military stations used military frequencies not far from the ham bands, as posted online.  They announced the amateur radio frequencies on which they listened for replies.  A complete list of the Military operations from the event can be downloaded here

Important Membership Vote Scheduled for April 19th

Earlier this year, Yeasu announced a short lived upgrade offer for their DR1-X repeaters to DR2-X repeaters.  The AARC owns 4 DR1-X repeaters and has a half interest with the Maryland Mobileers on a 5th.  We received notice of it only a few days from expiration, and did not have time to act one way or the other.  Then Yeasu announced the upgrade offer would be extended through the end of April.  John Williams (K8JW) who manages our club's repeaters, said he needed time to review the offer, and to determine if it was something we should consider.  A few weeks later John got in tou

Time for the General License Class

We are now only a few days from the start of the 2018 General License Class.  It begins on April 21st and runs through June 2, 2018.  I your are interested in attending, or know someone who is, preregistration is open here on the website.  Just click on Preregistration

Your Login Name is Now Your Call Sign

Yes, the rumors are true, you must now use your call sign as either your login name, or the first part of your login name.  In other words  you can be W3XXX or W3XXX Fred or W3XXX-Fred or W3XXX_Fred or anything like that.  The only exemptions are people without call signs.
