Next AARC Meeting is May 16th 2019

AARC Meeting Notice for Thursday, May 16, 2019;
Presentation by N3XUJ on "Planetary Defense at NASA:
Finding Near Earth Asteroids Before They Find Us"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
.
Amateur radio operators are ready to assist with emergency response to hurricanes, earthquakes, power outages, etc. But what if that emergency is an asteroid impact?
.
At the next AARC Club Meeting, our own Kelly Fast (N3XUJ), will be giving a presentation on how NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) is tasked with detecting and tracking Near-Earth Objects (NEO's) -- asteroids and comets that orbit the Sun like the planets, and whose orbits can bring them within 30 million miles of Earth’s orbit. The PDCO identifies NEO impact hazards, and develops mitigation strategies and technologies to avoid that scenario.
.
Dr. Kelly Fast, Program Manager for the Near-Earth Object Observations Program at the PDCO, is well qualified to discuss planetary defense. Kelly recently attended and spoke at the 6th International Planetary Defense Conference at the University of Maryland, along with Bill Nye (CEO of The Planetary Society) and Dr. Jim Green (NASA Chief Scientist). You may have also seen Kelly recently on "Star Talk" with Dr. Neal DeGrasse Tyson discussing the effects of potential impacts, and why we need to take the possibility more seriously.
.
This is a free event and is open to the public -- so feel free to bring a friend!

The Anne Arundel Radio Club is located on the grounds of the Davidsonville Family Rec Center (DFRC) at 3789 Queen Anne Bridge Road (21035).
