Kitbuilding at the Clubhouse
For you folk who are building the MFJ Cub, let me pass something on to you. When you do your alignment, pay particular attention to the part of the instructions about getting on the correct sideband. It does make a BIG difference.
I had an interesting QSO this evening with a ham in Ohio. I was running the cub at 2 watts and got a 589. He was running an Icom IC-756 and an Ameritron amplifier at 800 watts. I gave him a 599; I didn't want to embarrass him as he was really only a 579. Who says you can't have fun with QRP?

Kit Building at the Club House
Well, it went well today; nothing broken, smoked, or lost. There are four of us working on the ARRL sponsored MFJ Cub kits. The others are working on other efforts like a 100 watt amp for a QRP rig, a few hobby kits and repair of a SST 40. It looks like we'll have a few weeks of fun.
I would like to have our gatherings start around 1300 vice 1400. This way folks can get home early for Sunday dinners and such. As this is all more than a little casual, there are NO exact times to gather. Whatever time you can make, someone will be melting solder.
While I think of it, I strongly suggest that if you are working on anything electronic do not use lead free solder. There have been a number of reports of difficulties with lead free solder. So, use the real stuff. The issue with lead in solder started with lead in drinking water from plumbing and not from electronic fabrication.
