Morse Code Training Starts 20 February!

Greeting Code Fans and Wannabes!

The first class session of the 2010 Morse code training program will be held at the AARC clubhouse on Saturday, 20 February at Noon. This session will last about 90 minutes (maybe less), All other classes will last about an hour.

The "Code Mentor" will discuss this year's teaching plan and goals.

The bottom line is this:

    1. Students will learn 43 Morse characters, achieve a copying speed to 5 or more words per minute (WPM), learn how to send Morse code and achieve a sending speed of 5 or more WPM.

    2. Students will be able to operate one of our Morse code stations during Field Day (26-27 June).

    3. Students will have fun!

New students are encouraged to visit the club's Morse code website (http://morsecode.w3vpr.org/) and after reading the welcome page, use method #1 (http://morsecode.w3vpr.org/9634/) to start learning the 43 Morse code characters. Starting with Group 1, listen to and memorize the 5-7 Morse characters for 20-30 minutes preferably twice a day and never after 8:00pm (Your brain needs to unwind). Do this every day for a week before moving on to the next group. Drills with answer keys are available to gauge your progress. As you listen to the characters write them down and say the character (Didah – Alpha; Dit – Echo; Dahdit – November; etc.)

Code fans and former students who want to work on their sending and receiving skills are welcome to participate. The Code Mentor recommends that you visit the club's website and refresh your code copying skills before the session on the 20th. The Code Mentor will not be pleased if you show up and aren't refreshed. Graduates of last year's program will be given increasingly challenging practice that will increase their code copying and sending skills and prepare them to assist this year's students during Field Day.

Miss Ellen will be assisting the Code Mentor during various sessions. Many of last year's students will recall the colorful bruises attained during Field Day when their performance didn't measure up to Ellen's expectations or they needed additional "encouragement". Contact Kim for details. Ellen will be available to help you relive those exciting moments.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 20th.
